Who jailed Eskinder and the rest?

By Yilma Bekele

The headlines screamed ‘Ethiopian court convicts 24 of terrorism charges’. As usual it was a misleading and incorrect statement. There is no such animal called Ethiopian court. There is a TPLF controlled judicial arrangement in Ethiopia. Prime Minster Meles and his politburo are the directors behind the scene of this farce. For the last twenty-one years they have been using the power of the state to marginalize, terrorize, demean and undermine the Ethiopian citizen. We are so used to their bullying the average Ethiopian does not even dwell on it. We make that peculiar noise with our lips you know that hissing sound and move on.

Our brothers Eskinder Nega, Andualem Arage, Wubshet Taye our sister Reyot Alemu and the others whose names are not publicized were convicted for exercising their right to speak and write freely. They only used their voice and their choice of weapon was the pen and paper. There was no evidence to show otherwise. Ato Eskinder has the audacity to speculate the chance of Arab Spring migrating to Ethiopia. Ato Andualem was simply trying to organize and recruit people to his legally recognized party. Reyot and Wubshet were doing their job as journalist and reporter. In any other country this is a normal and routine kind of job. But we are not like any other country or any other people. Our Ethiopia has always been different. Not only we got strange and bizarre leaders but we also have a different breed of people.

Yes we are different both inside Ethiopia and in the Diaspora. A vast majority of us have decided to accept shame as normal behavior and we even celebrate it loudly and wear it with pride. We victimize each other our country and people and we are the first ones to holler foul. It is done so much and so often it is becoming a little boring. I am afraid we have lost any semblance of respect for our selves and what is sad is others are losing respect for both victim and victimizer. They deserve each other is what comes to mind.

Asians have this philosophy referred to as Ying and Yang to describe how opposites are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world. Nothing is totally ying or totally yang. Female and male, dark and light, cold and hot, water and fire are manifestations of yin and yang. ‘Just as the state of yin is reached yang begins to grow. Ying contains seed of yang and vice versa. They constantly transform each other. The classics state ‘ying creates yang and yang activates ying’. I am afraid that philosophy is not true in our country. Our ying and yang are not in balance. The harmonious change envisioned in the philosophy has gone haywire when it comes to us. Too much of one is bound to weaken and consume the other. That is happening in our society. This phenomenon is so clearly manifested in the Ethiopian Diaspora community.

Let us start with our yearly soccer tournament. It is such a beautiful and positive activity that it has energized our community for the last twenty-five years or more. It should be our pride and a showcase of how much good we can do when we work together. Unfortunately it is also the other side of us where a few can use this positive energy for negative purpose. Those that have been leading the organization have been using the proceeds as cash cow and also as a vehicle to undermine our unity and sell our country to the highest bidder. We let them do that. We see, we hear but we choose to be silent. We have this notion that ignoring bad deed will make it go away.

Thus the Ethiopian Soccer Federation in North America (ESFNA) governing body at long last voted to start fresh and reform this rogue outfit. Of course those who are so used to working behind the scene in the dark were not willing to go silently. They were taken to a real court that ordered to cease and deceit from using the name of the organization and also answer a few question regarding finances and book keeping. What did they do? They went to their sugar daddy and applied for welfare. The same person that is fully integrated with that other rogue outfit called the TPLF supposedly gave them $2 million US to carry out their mission of dividing us and setting us against each other. They, like their father and mentor Meles Zenawi do not believe in self-imitative but run to the nearest welfare donor to get their funding. He sells our land, borrow in our name and steals in consort with his friends, sells our daughters to Middle East degenerates and ours in the US squander their payment in renting stadium to entertain the rich and greedy. Money can buy you anything including entertainers that got their start from the Diaspora but now serve a new master to undermine their benefactors. Definitely Ying and yang are not in harmony or in balance.

If we look at our Church in exile it is something to be proud of. It is a place where our rich culture and ancient religion is celebrated like never before. It is a place where our fathers and mothers in exile find peace and happiness and every week and mentally transport themselves to that place they call home. It is a place where our children learn how social we are and how we respect and value our culture and country. It is such a beautiful feeling to see our children come in front of the congregation when they graduate from high school to be blessed by the priest and proudly inform us their choice of college. Then we have the troublemakers in every city and town. Their mission is to disrupt and divide us. There is no church spared from these prince’s of darkness that scheme behind the scene and attempt to take over the leadership. If that does not succeed they have no qualms in waging a relentless war to undermine and weaken and disparage all those that stand between them and their evil scheme. Our city is going thru such a painful process and it is sad to see families and friends in turmoil. Most of us allow them to do that by our silence and apathy. It is another instance ying and yang are not in harmony.

If you notice closely there is a close correlation between these two groups. If one has to draw a psychological profile we find both exhibit what is known as passive aggressive behavior, they are usually involved in what is called shady kind of business here in the US where they swindle large amounts of cash from their employers, they are low key and frequent visitors to Addis, upon their return they pretend to be anti Woyane but qualify it by talking about all the progress in buildings and roads, they have no qualms in taking their family and friends on the ponzi scheme of investing in stolen land to construct ground plus condominiums that take for ever to finish and double in cost. They are always inserted in key Ethiopian organizations like Churches, community centers or opposition party organizations where they could do the most damage in a stealth manner.

What our Woyane warriors are using on us is a scientific method Biologists use to fight insects and other pests that threaten both humans and animals. They utilize what is known as ‘Sterile insect technique’. This method of biological control works by releasing millions of sterile or genetically modified insects in the general population thus disrupting the normal reproduction cycle. Woyane releases these sterile human agents to create havoc among us.

A few days ago we had a fund raising activity for ESAT and also celebrate Ato Abebe’s heroic stand for his people and country by exposing the tyrant in front of his enablers and the whole world. There was no question a vast majority of our people was empowered by his action. There are most certainly over ten thousand Ethiopians in the Bay area where the event was held. Less than two hundred brave souls showed up to help raise fund to make ESAT a powerful force in the struggle against tyranny. A good amount was collected from those who came. We are happy and grateful. But I find it odd that out of all these country and freedom loving folks only a handful showed up. Why do you think it is so?

They all seem to harbor negative feelings against the TPLF regime. It is odd to meet some one that would speak favorably regarding the actions of the dictator or his polices. Every Starbucks and every coffee house is full of these talkers parsing the actions of the TPLF party. How come they don’t take the next logical step, which is to help bring this ugly regime to its knees? Why is there such a wide gulf between talk and action? Here is what President Obama said on his visit to the Holocaust Memorial in Washington a few months back speaking of the victims of nazi horror:

He said “Let us tell our children not only how they died, but also how they lived—as fathers and mothers, and sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters who loved hoped and dreamed just like us — we must tell our children about how this evil was allowed to happen – because so many people succumbed to their darkest instincts, and because so many others stood silent – We must tell our children. But more than that, we must teach them. Because remembrance without resolve is a hollow gesture. Awareness without action changes nothing. In this sense, “never again” is a challenge to us all—to pause and to look within

‘Awareness without action changes noting’ is the key phrase and that is what is escaping us. That is so many of us talk but are unable to move beyond that. We kid ourselves or we expect someone else to do the job for us. Is that why when Kinijit kicked Woyane’s ass so many people were pushing each other to get to the center of the action? We had a visitor to our church from Canada. Abune Michael of Calgary gave a memorable sermon a few Sundays back. What stuck in my mind was his saying ‘meswatenet yelelew emnet’ or belief without sacrifice I believe that is ying without yang.

Fear not all is not lost. We also have our Ethiopian Heritage Society of North America (EHSNA). They are celebrating their second anniversary from July 27-29 in Washington DC. Last years event with Judge Bertukan Mideksa was a huge success. This is one venue where our flag fly high our culture is celebrated with all its diversity and our history is told with all its glory. It is a family affair and our young ones and children are given the respect and attention they deserve. The March 2012 Adwa Victory celebration organized by EHSNA gave our ancestors gallant effort the highest honor reserved for such Herculean deed. We salute the organizers for shining a bright light on our accomplishments as people in this time of doom and gloom. This is one organization that is trying to bring balance between our yin and yang. We can see perfect harmony between the opposites.

Each one of us is faced with a choice. We can be carriers of change or we can follow the path of destruction. Change does not happen without effort. Those that are hell bent in bullying and dividing us are not going to leave voluntarily. No one willingly gives up his privileged position. It has never happened. They are unable or unwilling to see the freedom train coming at them at full speed. That is what happened to Mubarak, Gadaffi faithfully believed his people loved him and we see Assad for some reason thinking that he can save himself and his clan by killing all Syrians if necessary. Dictators are a rare breed of people. Meles honestly believes he can last a while longer. Locked in his palace surrounded by his yes men reading his own review and watching his one channel TV he is intoxicated by his own lies. Twenty-one years is a long time to be isolated from normal people. It is possible to create ones own make believe world.

How come we see Libya, Egypt, Yemen and now Syria and do not learn? How come we do not work a little harder to avoid such catastrophe? Why do we allow Eskinder, Andualem and all the other fellow Ethiopians pay the price on our behalf? How come we are unable to say no and show outrage at such act of injustice by a handful of people? Do you think Meles jailed our brothers and sister or do you think we allowed him to do such ugly deed due to our indifference and apathy? Is the blame on the dictator or on the vast majority that lets him gets away with this criminal act? I am sure we are all disgusted with this farce of jailing people for life because they spoke what the regime does not approve of. What is next, to go to prison accused of bad thought? Why not the dictator has no incentive not to follow that route. He knows we will take it silently. Didn’t we when Professor Asrat was denied medical treatment, when Asefa Maru was gunned down, when Judge Bertukan was jailed twice, when Gambella was sold, when our children are left to die in the jungles of Central Africa and their bodies scatted on the highways of Tanzania and the waters of Lake Malawi or Gulf of Aden? Yes no question about it we are responsible for the jailing of Eskinder and all the rest. Frankly I am bored and tired of shifting the blame.

What Happened to Ethiopian Youth National Movement?

Mankelklot Haile Selassie (PhD)
June 28, 2012

From the outset, the prompt response to this question is, it is sold out. To show the full picture in the building process of the Ethiopian Youth National Movement and now the Ethiopian National Transitional Council (ENTC), I am going to discuss, in my opinion, this very important and timely issue under four subtopics, namely: 1) The Formation of Ethiopian Youth National Movement, 2) The lay out of its organizational structure particularly for Addis Ababa, 3) Is the Ethiopian National Transitional Council needed now? and finally, 4) How Meles Zenawi killed the Diaspora Youth Movement

1. The formation of Ethiopian Youth National Movement.

It is the product of the “Global Civic Movement for Change in Ethiopia.” This Civic Movement was a very promising one to which I was a part at the beginning until I was deliberately pushed out. Then, I pushed for the decentralization of the activities, that is to let the civic groups that make up the umbrella organization spread all over the world, to act and plan independently when needed and as they see it fit, and, for the Civic Movement to focus on uprising. Certain individuals affiliated with certain political organizations did not like it. Unfortunately, through time the Civic Movement became the stepping and the recruiting platform for the so called political organizations. This promising Civic Organization was hijacked by certain political organizations and the movement finally fizzled out.

Coming back to the Youth Movement, at the beginning the intention was to organize the youth as part of the Global Civic Movement for Change in Ethiopia. An individual who volunteered to handle it took the responsibility to work around the Ethiopian youth. Before it separated itself and started to act independently, it was reporting it’s activities directly to the Global Civic Movement for Change in Ethiopia. For example to point out at least three of them: April 2, 2011, May 10, 2011 and May 17, 2011.

After certain period of time the individual who took the responsibility to organize the youth around the Civic Movement slowly started to separate and form an independent youth organization. It began the process of separation by declaring that it has its own logo, a modified logo of the Global Civic Movement for Change in Ethiopia. Further along it changed the name the Ethiopian Youth Movement to Ethiopian Youth National Movement (EYNM).

Under its article “The Revolution Just Started,” April 2, 2011 it specifically pointed out its vision, mission, and objectives for the youths inside Ethiopia and in Diaspora. Here are what it declared in this article:

Vision
To be a leading galvanizing movement for the Ethiopian youth struggle to topple the TPLF tyranny and be a catalyst for the establishment of democratic society in Ethiopia .

Mission
To serve as a facilitating platform in bringing the Ethiopian youth together to network and build solidarity, brainstorm ideas, strategize long term and short term plans to shape the political, social and economic future of Ethiopia .

Goals and Objectives
Goal 1: Organize the leading change agents
Objectives:
a) Formulate long-term strategy plan on how to sustain democratic change in Ethiopia
b) Recruit change agents from across all groups of the Ethiopian youth. Create ad-hoc network structures for the change agents
c) Train change agents on the practical applications of non-violent engagement

Goal 2: Organize and mobilize the Ethiopian youth
Objectives
a) Use the available technology to allow youth to interact, converse relevant issues, build solidarity identify initiatives and mobilize action
b) Provide practical training on nonviolent engagement
c) Create online advocacy kits to assist youth in the methods of nonviolent struggle
d) Create global alliances
e) Build advocacy campaigns to reach private, non-profit and
government entities in support of democracy
f) Expand and strengthen the leadership structure of youth through forming chapters
g) Mobilize the Ethiopian youth for goal-oriented action on the TPLF regime

Goal 3: Transform the movement as a civil society organization in the post-TPLF Ethiopia
Objective
a) Formulate long-term strategic plan on how to sustain democratic change in Ethiopia

2. The layout of its specific organizational structure particularly for Addis Ababa.

The setup of the organizational structure for the activities of the Youth Movement inside Ethiopia, particularly in Addis Ababa was divided into three sub-cities with their own liaison officers. Arada, Kirkos and Gullele as one group; group two included Kolfe keranyo, Akaki -kaliti and Nefas Silk -Lafto, and group three included Lideta, Bole, Addis Ketema and Yeka. Link these sub-city divisions with the above vision, mission, and objectives and notice the comprehensiveness of the layout.

Whether this lay out did have a well organized body behind it and therefore could have worked or not is an argument to be made. But what one could have surmised from the face value of the above is that had this organizational lay out followed through with commitment and dedication one can clearly see the impact the Diaspora youth would have achieved. I argue that this potential threat was well observed by Meles and his regime therefore Meles has to take an effective and efficient action to cripple and finally kill this Ethiopian Youth National Movement.

The decreeing a law to criminalize independent telecom use, CPJ/IFEX, June 18, 2012, partly could be to block the free communication between the youths inside Ethiopia and in Diaspora. It appears that the regime did realize that the Ethiopian youth movement to have the potential threat to the throne of Meles Zenawi and therefore has to deal with it immediately, by any means necessary, effectively and efficiently.

The purposes of the above two subtopics is to show, a) how the Ethiopian Youth National Movement have became an independent, solid and formidable, short of extensive youth mass base particularly here in the Diaspora. The absence of youth mass base is one of the weaknesses that I pointed out in the suggestion paper to EYNM. And, b) for one to superimpose the above organizational situation of the Youth Movement on that of what it is doing now, that is, the formation of Ethiopian National Transitional Council and further on to Ethiopian Government for the Interim period, and see how the leadership in this fatal affair it is pursuing became the deliberate instrument of destruction by diverting the focus from the activities of the Youth Movement. Therefore “What happened to the Ethiopian Youth National Movement” becomes relevant and timely question.

3. Is the Ethiopian national Transitional Council (ENTC) needed now?

The leader of the Youth Movement and myself have discussed this same issue perhaps a couple of times before Dr. Fesseha Eshetu came to the United States. Then I stressed that it is not the right time to do it now. My argument was based on the lack of strength of the activities in general, the lack of strength of the communication between the Diaspora Youth movement and the Youth inside Ethiopia, and above all on the lack of strength of the relationship between the Ethiopian Youths in Diaspora and that of the Youths inside Ethiopia. It was not ripe then to call for ENTC nor it is ripe now given the above reasoning. However, it became clear that one of the thrusts of the argument for pushing for the formation of ENTC is to divert and inhibit the independent activities of the Ethiopian Youth National Movement tantamount to letting it die its natural death. The organizers of this Formation Conference know that it is so. It is a blatant insult to the Ethiopian community in general and the Ethiopian youth in particular to pretend that it is not so.

When I visited the newly opened office by the invitation of Masresha Tilahun, this same issue became the core of our discussion. Three of us, Dr. Fesseha Eshetu, Masresha Tilahun and myself argued about it very strongly. There was a fourth individual almost as an observer who did not utter a word. Then I argued that the timing is not right to form ENTC. My reasoning was based, as it was between Masresha and myself long time ago as pointed out earlier, on the importance first to organize the youth inside Ethiopia and let them confirm whether the political situation is ripe or not. That is whether particularly the people of Addis Ababa was ready for an uprising or not. If the information became positive, then it will be logical and of course essential to form the Transitional Council. Or one can call it transitional government. Of course the urgency of the time will determine the composition of the body to be formed.

Since there are mature and well seasoned opposition political parties, who are gauging the political situations inside Ethiopia very carefully, at least one would assume so, both inside and outside of Ethiopia if uprising took place it would not be like Egypt. I believe the opposition political parties will take it to be their responsibility that the uprising is lead properly and achieve the desired objective which is the empowerment of Ethiopian people. In my opinion the coming forward to lead it by even one bold political party would accomplish the purpose. In fact, there could be the potential for the Transitional Government to be initiated and formed by this bold single political party. Or, another potential is that the Youth Movement would provide its own leader and run the process.

4. How did Meles Zenawi killed the Diaspora Youth Movement?

What I am going to discuss under this topic is exactly what I discussed with Masresha Tilahun, here after the leader, privately, in two very open and blunt conversations the two of us have had. One of the conversations was face to face after he invited me to see their new office. The second one was telephone conversation.

The crippling and then the killing of the Ethiopian Youth National Movement was initiated when the leader was contacted by Dr. Fesseha Eshetu. After he was personally contacted by Dr. Fesseha Eshetu the two of them started to initiate the formation of Ethiopian National Transitional

Council (ENTC) obviously on the grave of Ethiopian Youth National Movement. Dr. Fesseha Eshetu was the messenger of Meles Zenawi to kill the Ethiopian Youth National Movement. This was what I told the leader in our face to face over dinner conversation on the day I visited their office. Later on, during our telephone conversation I told him to stop this Ethiopian National Transitional Council thing, get rid Dr. Fesseha Eshetu and concentrate on the Youth Movement. At no time did he try to challenge what I said.

Please picture this. Dr. Fesseha came all the way from Addis Ababa with a mission. The target for accomplishing his mission was Masresha Tilhaun, the leader and the main organizer of the Ethiopian Youth National Movement. This leader was disseminating strong revolutionary slogans and videos which should have been noticed by Meles and his regime. As far as the regime is concerned there is no reason for not targeting the Diaspora Youth Movement, hence Masresha Tilahun.

The shift from the Ethiopian national Movement to Ethiopian National Transitional Council (ENTC), in fact, it has further moved up a step to form Ethiopian Government for the Interim Period, which is a government in exile, with its charter are concrete indications to have already thrown the Ethiopian Youth National Movement under the bus. The here and there injection of the Youth Movement issues is a blatant intellectual dishonesty that is being committed against the Youth Movement hence against the people of Ethiopia. In addition, the agenda of the ENTC Formation Conference of July 1 to July 3, 2012, in Dallas, Texas, clearly shows how the Ethiopian Youth National Movement have been deliberately undermined and killed by the leadership of the organizers, hence Meles Zenawi.

Calling for press conference on June 24, 2012 about the Ethiopian Youth National Movement is the mother of all dishonesty and very cheap political propaganda, which was being done while stabbing the Youth Movement in the back. Above all it is an insult to the intelligence of those particularly watching, reading, and listening to every move made and information disseminated by the leadership of the Youth Movement.

Believing that the Ethiopian Youth National Movement will follow through it’s kind of blueprint I copied above, based on its organizational structure and based on very serious discussions we have had between its leader and myself, I contributed $1800.00 within a period of seven months. At the beginning one thousand dollars as seed money, then $500.00 and later $300.00. My proposal and our agreement was strictly to be used for the activities of the Youth Movement inside Ethiopia. Do I regret it now that the Youth Movement is sold out? Absolutely not!!! I did what my conscious told me to do and took risk. In my opinion, sometimes, one has to take risk in politics too.

I have always stressed the financial need of the Youth Movement in Diaspora to be fulfilled by its members. The greater the number of its members the greater the Diaspora Youth Movement financial satisfaction. In fact, had the Diaspora Youth Movement recruited large number of youths in Diaspora they would have come to the aid of the Youth Movement inside Ethiopia in a very substantial manner.

I have also provided the Ethiopian Youth National Movement a five page written suggestion titled “My Observation” on Dec. 3, 2012. In there I suggested what and how to do things. I also suggested specific organizational structure that deals specifically with the Youth Movement in Diaspora. I have also suggested how and what to do with the youths inside Ethiopia. The following was my suggestion:

4.2 Organizational structure of the Ethiopian National Youth Movement inside Ethiopia.

The activities of the Movement in the Diaspora is quite different from that of the activities of the Movement inside Ethiopia. The actual uprising, its planning as well as the strategies and the tactics as to how and when to execute it is done by the Movement inside Ethiopia. Therefore, there are at least two important matters for the Ethiopian National Youth Movement in the Diaspora to note:

a) it is about time, if they have not done it already, the Ethiopian National Youth Movement inside Ethiopia to form a clandestine strong and impenetrable collective leadership made up to four or more committed and possibly sharp individuals. They can choose their chairman/woman, the secretary and the treasurer from among themselves. Naturally, the most active and with progressive, and the one with constructive, ideas will be chosen as a leader. It is very important for them to be in a position that if and when one of them is jailed or suspected by the regime they should be able to replace him/her fast.
able to replace him/her fast.

It is the responsibility of the Ethiopian National Movement in Diaspora to work with its existing contacts very carefully and clandestinely, to encourage, in fact must insist, the formation of the collective leadership immediately. When there is a well organized and disciplined body that is capable of providing continuous, constructive and farsighted leadership, it is inevitable those who do the grassroots level of activities will be disciplined and very vigorous in their day to day activities because they have full confidence in the leadership.

b) Do not interfere in what the youth Movement inside Ethiopia plans, organizes, and acts upon. As stated in the public meeting of Nov. 27, 2011, there are 360,000 facebook users inside Ethiopia and the Ethiopian National Youth Movement has 13,000 facebook members inside them. And most of them are in Addis Ababa. Here, one can vividly see the potential for action. It should not be wasted by not involving them with some kinds of clandestine type of activities. Keep them on their toes, so to speak, until such time that the major activity arrives, which is the uprising. When and if this body is well organized it is a sufficient force to plan and execute uprising. Don’t waste time by immersing yourself in just organizing, organizing, and organizing.

Finally, it appears it is too late to revive the Ethiopian Youth National Movement and bring it back to its original position. Meles Zenawi has succeeded in killing it. The Ethiopian National Transitional Council’s conference of July 1 to July 3, 2012 to be held in Dallas Texas is an extended arm of Meles Zenawi to do a final touch on the burial of the Ethiopian Youth National Movement. It is a subtle and well calculated move.

Organization, Unity, and Leadership

June 22, 2012 – By Yelfiwos Wondaya

“So unity, planning, and nonviolent discipline are the ingredients that are sort of the necessary conditions for a successful civil resistance movement”. Ethiopian Review June 9th, 2012.

“The best way to be original is to not to copy anyone’s work.”  in other words  remained to be original in our thoughts and objectives without being bothered to be  copycat is what we are required to pursue in order to achieve our goals.  Popular movements without political organizations would not go anywhere.  Because, political organizations are the chief means by which political tactics, strategies, and goals are exercised.  Most importantly, political parties are the  main avenues in which political issues, ideas, methods and disciplines are discussed in the community and thereby changing the civil resistance movement  into a full fledged national revolution against the regime in Addis.

With that said, the fact that the so-called Ethiopian constitution is framed by an ethnocentric dictatorial regime to serve its narrow purpose, one would not expect to see it working for all parties on board, much less to preserve Ethiopia’s unity and territorial integrity intact. Although mentioned in the constitution still the TPLF is not willing to comply with its own rule of law. At will, though the TPLF undermines the basic substances mentioned in its own fake constitution one of which is a common platform in which both parties [the regime and the oppositions] could be able to build an agreement to settle a difference of opinion in a way that is acceptable to all. Worst of all, its constitution does not promote unity, equality, fraternity and social justice for all to take root in Ethiopia. So in this case, one would conclude that not merely a regime change or reform per se but a revolution that must be played out by the genuine parties and the public at large. Thus in order to turn the popular revolution into a success, one would also conclude that the objective condition at hand needs to acquire the following important continuities, a society that defies all orders from Mele’s tyrant regime, unity, organization, leadership, and outside factors that would influence Ethiopians in a positive and uplifting ways.

Firstly, though Ethiopians openly resisted the regime in the past but the resistances were not conducted in a cohesive manner as a result have been crashed and suppressed by the regime one at a time. After all, “a house divided against itself cannot stand” often times than not, however, students in Addis, Mekele, Jimma and other higher learning institutions were striking but not collectively in a cohesive manner, which is why also they did not get anywhere, and also Christian worshipers in Gondar, Muslims in Addis and then, the youths together with the general public came out in thousands to oppose the election result of 2005, during which time over 35 thousands people locked up in prison and were subjected to pain, and suffering from torture and continue to languishing in woyanes’ top-security prisons allover. At the same time, some 200 people were gun down by the regime’s police and secret agents and the rest had been chased, harassed and intimidated by non other than the agents themselves.  In unison, though there were about three million people came out in Addis to oppose the regime but were dispersed non other than by the so-called opposition leaders in 2005. Potentially though such pattern of events are positive indications for one to confirm that we have indeed a defying society in Ethiopia. With that in mind, Ethiopians have a reason to believe that there is a meeting place both for the public and the genuine political groupings to join forces and carry out a collective form of protest against the regime. And in due time, the said form of actions will set off a chain of events and shall bring about a full fledged revolution in Ethiopia.  Collectively though the revolution requires an effective leadership that can promote a pragmatic course of action in a bid to liberate the country from the yoke of tyranny.

Secondly, the question of leadership is vital. In order to mobilize the public and prepare forces for actions the movement requires a leadership, a leadership to frame and formulate slogans, tactics, catchphrases, and strategies that have an immediate impact on the movement. And also leadership is vital to coordinate the movements ahead and produce more leaders that would organize the ordinary people of cities, towns, and villages across the nation. Leaders of all ranks are also required to distribute flyers, leaflets and other promotional materials to their own respective regions and locals on a timely fashion. In such a way leaders of all ranks can control and coordinate various activates through out the nation. Once the question of leadership is resolved, the rest is possible to change the no-win situation around and move on to the next level where waging a pragmatic form of action is possible. And then again, move on to the next level where our superior moral truth dominates enemy’s position and brings about the downfall of our last few rivals in power. In short, the task of leadership is to coordinate, guide, and direct the revolution and further influence the youths and the elderly to join the protest against their common enemy the TPLF that is. So, at this critical time, an action oriented political entity capable of providing the public with an effective leadership is highly required to appear into the political arena in order to topple Mele’s regime and rescue the victory on the horizon. Indeed, a leadership envisaging and contemplating a future ahead, a leadership that has a firm hold on the public’s imagination has to come forward to assume a new role of leadership to lead the revolution.

Thirdly, the question of unity is vital too. Although the task of leadership falls upon the entire organizations, coalitions and alliances it takes an initiative of individuals to determine whether or not the organizations function effectively, and upon their functioning depends on the determination and the commitment of members of different ranks and beyond. The society on the other hand is the sea in which individuals, organizations and associations are brought to shore. Together, all of whom are parts and parcels of the shore and of the wave of the sea in which more leaders will emerge from within to coordinate further the different functions and resources into a one pathway forward. In such a way, leaders could let numerous citizens involve at will and bring their contributions to the coherent form of action in place. Isn’t that a challenge for us all, and a test of time to preserve the genesis and the progression of our revolution and its success story ahead? After all, “United we stand divided we fall” unity is power! Unity together with firepower is even more vital to blow the enemy at hand. If not right, Might is absolutely essential for us to survive my fellow Ethiopians. In all fairness, might is the answer for an upper hand: as lip service is for an empty technique of rhetoric. “Actions speak louder than words” Taken as a whole, the popular insurrection of Ethiopian people is prone to generate more of pragmatic actions ahead. And then, the unity together with the said leadership would share a great deal of experiences with foreign movements that are already successful and what not, would carefully apply it in a ways it would help the movements go forward

Fourthly, the wind of change blowing from the North and the shock wave it sends toward the south may well have positive impact on Ethiopians’ situation as a whole. If not decisive, it is an encouraging factor for Ethiopians’ situation to get ahead of time and use it before hand to weaken our enemy. It also helps them feel emotionally and intellectually attached to the movement and their comrades in arm in a positive and uplifting ways, it helps leaders utilize their natural talents and to convey optimism and send that down the line with a message that conveys strength and security for all on the ground. It indeed gives them morale boost especially, when they see that the opinions of the world powers are changed in favor of the winning situations in Tunisia, Egypt etc. Be that as it may, the groundbreaking revolution in Ethiopia is imminent although Meles will try his best to appease it by massacring the people indiscriminately or what have you. Despite the pain and injuries his excessive force might have inflicted, he will not make it this time. Much like those dictators in Tunisia, Egypt, etc, Mele’s will lose grip of power and leave on the backdoor without any traces. The Tunisians and Egyptians have done it so will Ethiopians so long as they are determined in terms of moving forward in a full force to defend their human and constitutional rights in the open. And then, much like Egyptians and others, Ethiopians’ uprising will enjoy the support of democratic countries and international communities across the world. And then, the WOYANES’ deceptive and distorted information that had been systematically spreading to confuse the international community will be silenced at the end. For that to happen, the Mass Medias of all oppositions are expected to convey a coordinated message against Mele’s press and get in the way to frustrate his military and other forces on the ground as well. And then, the friendly press together with general public would make it clear even clearer to that of our defectors and collaborators not to taking side with the dying regime and more. Those false prophets aside, however, the foremost duty of all genuine Ethiopian political and civic organizations is to depose the TPLF/EPRDF and replace its ethnocentric regime with a democratic system of government. Clearly, this is the central theme as is a dividing wall separated us from the enemy. The TPLF/ EPRDF together with those fortified collaborators that are relentlessly reinforcing its political muscle must be condemned permanently to the fire of hell.

Lastly, we are at a time when we need to make our choices not only to condemn the regime but also to have the courage to defy and let the blast blew the dictator off! And of course, winning the war against all odds is the choice and the goal of moral forces as opposed to losers that are in battle for evil deeds. Victors Vs. losers. If there is anything in between of these two forces it should be nothing but belongs to those who are neglected and left in oblivion during the course of this watershed time in our history. History is in the making and the positive aspect of all this is that victory is inevitable so long as we are determined to keep on struggling in spite of obstacles and so long as the movement is led by an experienced and well competent leadership. In the aftermath, however, the said leadership will find itself in a position where the vast majority of the people are awaiting in the wings to cast their vote to it given that friendship is the product of privileged circumstances and authentic victories and hardly ever any enemy thereafter.

In conclusion, a competent leadership together with a defying society, unity, and organization is ultimately needed to make our national struggle a success in terms of changing Meles’ ethnocentric philosophy together with his an ethnic oriented federal system. So much so, such continuities as competent leadership, a defying society, united forces and organizations will also be the resources to found some broadly based transitional government in Addis, which in turn, will frame a constitution that paves a way to broadly representative government, and allows parties of all persuasions to freely participate in the upcoming political system and equally permits different professional and civic associations, to join or choose political organizations of their own choices.

Skype and Ethiopia

By Yilma Bekele

The origins of the Internet can be traced to ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) that was funded by the US Department of Defense (DARPA) for use by its research labs in the 1960’s. The Internet as we know moved from connecting research institutions and Universities into commercial use in the middle of the 1980’s.

Today the Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks. The beauty of the Internet is nobody really owns it. Every computer that is connected to the Internet is part of the network. Your laptop or desktop together with millions of private, public, academic, business, government networks forms part of this vast system of interconnected computers.

The Internet has revolutionized human communication like nothing before. It is the most outstanding innovation in human history regarding communication capability. Our lives have changed dramatically due to the Internet. The great economic boom of the 90’s all over the world can be traced to innovation that accompanied the Internet. Where does our Ethiopia fit in this human advancement story?

I am afraid we are absent or unaccounted for! We are not even in the periphery. Our participation in this humongous, game changer event is nothing to write home about. It is so embarrassing the best option is not to talk about it, discuss it or raise the issue. If our country was a computer it will be considered to be in hibernation mode, not on not off barely alive. The Meles regime and his TPLF party can get all the credit for condemning eighty million people to live in darkness. That is exactly where we find ourselves-in complete darkness and no chance of light at the end of the tunnel either. You think I am exaggerating and being so negative because I am filled with hate. I am afraid that is not so. Look at the table below and you be the judge my friend.

See what I mean? Out of eighty million plus people only half a million Internet users. That leaves seventy nine million five hundred thousand in the dark. Why do you think this is so? Is it because we are poor?  We are stupid? Uneducated? Unable to figure how it works? Not interested? Didn’t think it is important? Felt investment in such technology is a waste of time and resources? Or too busy developing other technology? Or you think it could it be due to lack of leadership? As people we are no different than Americans Europeans or our African neighbors. The only thing we see here is the quality of leadership that differentiates our country from others. The leaders set the pace, define the priorities and the people follow.

When it comes to the Internet our leader felt that is not a priority and that is not where our budget should be invested on. Why do you think Ato Meles and company felt the Internet not to be the place to invest and grow? The simple but obvious answer is the word ‘communication’. Communication is knowledge and knowledge is the first causality of a tyrannical regime. Keeping people in the dark is the main goal of a dictatorship. Illiterate people are docile. It is easy to manipulate a damned down population. Internet is the number one enemy of the Ethiopian government. Instead of laying fiber optic to speed up the wiring of our country the Meles regime invests the limited budget in blocking, censoring and spying on the citizen. The last two weeks have been a busy time to the TPLF regime. It has rolled out one draconian law after another to bully, intimidate and ride rough on our people. Here is the evidence.

Skype is a voice- over-Internet Protocol service and software application. Skype allows users to communicate over the Internet using voice, video and instant messaging. As of September of 2011 Skype has over six hundred million users worldwide. The Ethiopian government has made using Skype a crime punishable up to fifteen years in prison.

Tor (short for The onion router) is a system intended to enable online anonymity. The Tor project a 501(c) research/education nonprofit organization distributes the software free of charge. According to the wonderful people of Tor network their ‘client software routes Internet traffic through a worldwide volunteer network of servers to conceal a user’s location or usage from anyone conducting network surveillance or traffic analysis.’  The Ethiopian government is actively blocking Tor network.

There are over eighty million Ethiopians. As of 2012 there are about a million fixed line service users and close to three million mobile users in Ethiopia. It is the lowest teledensity in Africa. There are less than half a million Internet users in Ethiopia and that is in the bottom even for Africa. That number constitutes  .06% of the Ethiopian population.

Why is the Ethiopian government enacting such draconian law when you can clearly see Internet does not play any major role in the life of the citizen? Why is the government becoming the laughing stock of the planet by equating phone usage to committing murder? All indications are the issue is not about Skype or Tor but it is all about control and bullying into submission. It is all about instilling fear. Fear is the main currency of a dictator. They are not worried about the .06% but they are very much interested in showing the ninety nine percent who exactly is in charge. In your face is how they like to operate. They are saying we can do anything we want and tough luck there is nothing you can do about it!

Do you think they are crazy? I am afraid not. They have been getting away with that kind of attitude the last twenty years what makes you think it will be different this time? We will talk about it, we will gossip, we will condemn silently ( yechelema gelmecha) and life will go on as usual. Actually that is not true about all of us. There are a few working hard to circumvent this tragedy. Groups such as Ginbot7, OLF, ONLF, ALF, Andenet Party, our independent Web sites, ESAT among others are working day and night to teach, organize and help our people stand up to Woyane abuse.

There are different avenues to fight injustice. There are hundreds of ways to resist oppression. I will paraphrase two Chinese educators on this subject. According to Sun Tzu the ‘best defense is a good offense’ and Mao Zedong followed it with ‘the only real defense is active defense.’ meaning for the purpose of counter attacking and taking offense. I believe the current aggression against our people begs for a robust counter offense. Here I am speaking about cyber warfare.

It is about time our people developed this type of self-defense to protect our freedom. It is within our capability and it is our moral duty to protect our country and people. According to a recent Time magazine article that is what the US is helping the Syrian opposition with. Developing a cyber warfare capability. They are training the freedom fighters to resist the Assad regime in  the art of circumvention technology. The use of encryption, SIM card in cheap burner phones that can easily be discarded and developing ‘Internet in a suitcase’ to provide Web access when Assad shuts it down is being explored. Apps are being developed that download a panic button that will instantly wipe out contacts and documents from smart phones and computers. They are experimenting with Apps that present a false screen when the wrong security code is entered and Apps that blur the faces of dissidents when posting videos and photos on line. Today the camera is as powerful as the AK47.

It is also important our highly educated lawyers and Human Rights advocates explore the concept of ‘I am just following order’ defense that is sure to be used by those that are doing the dirty work for the minority based illegal regime. Whereas the current Ethiopian Constitution is full of guarantees of rights and freedom to the citizen those that are killing, imprisoning, torturing, spying and using their know how to block and jam should be warned about accountability. They should be made aware of their oath to uphold the Constitution not the rule of one man or a single party. ‘I am just following order’ did not hold water in the Nuremberg trials of Nazi criminals.

Those educated Ethiopians that are enabling the regime to spy on fellow citizens, block Web sites, target emails and social media postings should be warned about the consequences of their actions. They are following illegal and immoral orders given by those that are using force and coercion to stay in power. Sooner or later this house of cards will come tumbling down and it will be time to answer for all those that used their technical know how to hurt their people. Blind allegiance is not a wining strategy or ignorance a valid defense. It is a shame some sell their soul to the devil for fame and fortune.

A Downward Spiral for Freedom of Expression in Ethiopia

by By Katrina Kaiser

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/06/downward-spiral-freedom-expression-ethiopia

Internet shutdowns, content filtering, arrests of bloggers, and online

surveillance in North Africa have been headline news for the past year and

a half, but internet issues in the rest of the African continent haven’t

received quite as much press coverage. This silence is partly because there

is simply less internet penetration south of the Sahara, but there may also

be a paralyzing current of opinion whereby stories that highlight human

rights issues or a lack of democracy in the region are either dismissed as

old news or written off as paternalistic.

Ethiopia sometimes gets particularly little coverage in Western or

international media because the political situation there is not nearly as

dramatic as it is in other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The government

is nominally structured as a parliamentary democracy and it has good

relations with the United States and Europe. Still, the ruling Ethiopian

People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front tightly controls the country’s

electoral politics and media representation.

Internet censorship and content filtering are

well-established<http://opennet.net/research/profiles/Ethiopia>in

Ethiopia. The state owns and manages the country’s sole Internet

Service provider, Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation (Ethio-Telcom). While

Ethiopian Internet penetration is only about 1%, there is still a vibrant,

tightly-knit community of bloggers whose websites, blogs, and Facebook

pages have been blocked by the government. The blocks themselves look

innocuous to Ethiopian Internet users, because the browser will simply

notify users that the server request has timed out.

This error-message block is similar to what users have experienced in

China<http://insidesearch.blogspot.tw/2012/05/better-search-in-mainland-china.html>when

trying to access censored websites or use restricted search terms. It

figures, then, that the Ethiopian and Chinese governments have conducted

joint workshops<http://www.eprdf.org.et/web/guest/news/-/asset_publisher/c0F7/content/3-june-2012-26-2004>on

“mass media institution” management and Internet management.

Inexpensive Chinese technology has also replaced American technology for building

Ethiopian Internet infrastructure.

EFF recently reported on a new Telecom Service Infringement

Law<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/05/week-internet-censorship-points-system-weibo-activist-released-bahrain-censorship>that

includes explicit content-filtering provisions that protect “national

security.” The law criminalizes online speech that may be construed as

defamatory or terrorist, and holds the website or account owner liable even

if the speech is posted as a comment by a third party on their website.

These speech-chilling stipulations are hidden deep within a licensing bill

that would, on the surface, seem to simply clarify Ethio-Telecom’s power to

regulate Internet services such as VoIP.

Aggressive content regulation through secret filtering and legal

restrictions is just the beginning of Ethiopia’s draconian Internet policy.

Ethio-Telecom has recently begun deep packet inspection of all Internet

traffic in the country. Engineers at the Tor Project

discovered<https://blog.torproject.org/blog/ethiopia-introduces-deep-packet-inspection>this

when

Tor <https://www.torproject.org/about/overview> stopped working in Ethiopia

weeks ago. They determined that the Internet service provider had figured

out how to fingerprint and subsequently block Tor requests encrypted

through TLS. Bridge-configuration, the ordinary way to get around Tor

blocks in other countries, failed to work in Ethiopia until a workaround

was subsequently developed. An engineer at Tor later

hypothesized<https://blog.torproject.org/blog/update-censorship-ethiopia>,

“My guess is that they are only blocking Tor because whatever device

(probably from an outside firm) they have came with a block-Tor-plugin.” At

this time, the only other countries that actively block access to Tor are

China and Iran.

Why does Ethiopia keep company with some of the most restrictive Internet

regimes in the world if the country has so little connectivity and few

users? The country’s Internet policy continues to develop in the broader

context of an equally restrictive press freedom environment. During the

last general election in 2005, many journalists, election observers, and

opposition party leaders were detained. UNESCO hosted a World Press Freedom

Day event in Addis Ababa, the national capital, about a year ago.

Ironically, the government forcibly

replaced<https://www.cpj.org/2011/05/ethiopia-censors-unesco-world-press-freedom-day-ev.php>several

independent journalists on the agenda with pro-government speakers.

Like the former Soviet republics of Belarus, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan,

Tajikistan, Georgia and Kazakhstan, the Ethiopian government may be

ratcheting up its Internet censorship regime in response to fears sparked

by the Arab Spring. EFF will continue to keep a close eye on development as

politically sensitive milestones, such as the Ethiopia’s general election,

near.

Using Abbay as a wedge issue.

By Yilma Bekele

The Ethiopian government was peddling its ponzi scheme of selling bonds for
the pie in the sky project named The Grand Renaissance Dam’ on the Abbay
river here in the Bay Area. It was not as lavish as the event that took
place in their embassy in Washington DC. That ‘event was graced by the
presence of a high- level Ethiopian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister
and Foreign Affairs Minister and Chairman of the National Renaissance
Council, Haile Mariam Desalegn’ according to Aiga. Since he has such a long
title they have shortened to D/PM, FM to go along with his curtailed duty
that only includes reading written notes, greeting visitors and presiding
at Renaissance meetings.

Ours event was shall I say ‘graced’ by their Conciliate from Los Angles and
a political science professor from Addis Abeba University. Considering I
was marching in front their office in Los Angles just a week ago regarding
their current attempt at destroying our cherished heritage of Waldeba
monastery it was a little confusing to see his honor involved in building a
dam. They invited all Ethiopians and I just couldn’t refuse. My curiosity
overcame my rationality. I am glad I went, If the Ethiopian people are
subjected to such farcical presentation day in day out I felt sitting for a
two hours presentation was the least I can do to understand the daily
stress of my people.

The first speaker that described herself as the Chairperson of the project
in the Bay Area mentioned that her group has been active for less than
three months. What knocked me off my seat was her declaration that in this
short time they have been able to sell $138,000 US dollars worth of bonds.
That is 2.4 million Bir. I was impressed. Then I turned around and all I
could see was about twenty-five people in the room. I thought people who
paid all that money will defiantly attend a meeting to see how their money
was spent but for some reason they just did not bother to show up. Is it
possible that they are just a figment of someone’s imagination?

Well with all things Woyane the imagination is always greater than the
reality and this was an indication of better things to happen as the
meeting progressed. One thing I notice about Woyane lectures is that they
have this unhealthy fascination with power point presentation. It is futile
attempts to sugar coat the lie and empty rhetoric by sharp looking graphs
and larger than life pictures. Facts are glossed over while the listener is
trying to figure out all the confusing information being displayed at a
random fashion.

The Ambassador has the most difficult task of the two speakers. It is not
easy being a snake oil salesman. The regular joke about us not being smart
or dedicated enough to use the mighty Abbay was of course mentioned. We are
supposed to thank the far-reaching leadership of Meles Zenawi to have come
up with such a fantastic and brilliant idea of building a dam on Abbay. I
am sure we will be told soon it came to him during his sleep showing us
even in bed that sharp mind is still working. The Ambassador used a short
documentary to show us the progress since the start of the project. Shall
we say the presentation was a little lacking for a task that is projected
to cost us billions?

The short video was made either to insult or mock anybody with an ounce of
intelligence. There was one excavator and one dump truck and a few cement
mixer trucks. Yes I said one lonely excavator. For a country with eighty
million people where over half of the adult population is unemployed you
would think human labor would be the preferred choice if one really wants
to use the resources under his nose. Unfortunately that will require the
enthusiastic participation of the nation in the project but when your
government is unpopular and viewed with suspicion that is not an option.
Plus it would require transporting people from one kilil to another and
that is not allowed.

What we saw was may be fifty or so guys dressed in orange uniform. What was
fascinating was to see the skinny flag of Salini the Italian construction
company flying from a bowed tree pole. If you remember Salini was the same
company that was in charge of Gibe II project where the tunnel collapsed
exactly a month after inauguration. That was a no bid project and you can
imagine where most of the money borrowed in then name of Ethiopia went. I
thought this project was by us and for us and what the heck is Salini doing
there? May be Salini is paying us for what Minilk did to his grand pa a
while back. Lets us all remind our children to get back the money stolen
with the modern day Askaris including interest as soon as we reclaim our
land.

The official spoke at length about the many successful projects
accomplished the last twenty years. That is well and good but twenty years
is a long time and showing no progress would have been a little strange.
The issue here is here is how much progress and under what circumstances.
When you consider President Obama is fighting like hell for his reelection
bid and he only had four years to correct a colossal economic melt down I
would say twenty years is quite generous amount of time to do miracles. So
our question to our rulers becomes what you got to show for twenty years of
being in complete charge? Knocking down the old cannot be a perpetual
excuse, at a certain point one has to stand on his own record.
Unfortunately like a broken record our rulers never tire talking about
yesterday to cover up today’s shortcoming.

I have to admit the professor gave a very intelligent presentation
regarding the role water or river plays in international dealings between
nations. He was very knowledgeable on the subject and his power point
presentation was flawless. The problem reared its head when it comes to his
conclusion. It is one thing to explain water intellectually but to bring it
home and try to make it relate to woddase dam is a lit bit tricky, and it
showed. He was left floundering unable to commit and say this project is
what is needed and this regime can bring it to life. He cannot say that
with conviction. As a political scientist he knows theory in one thing but
implementation requires a whole host of other factors that have to be
present to achieve success. The current organization that is operating in
our country is not conducive to attain that goal and a first year college
freshman can tell you that. It would be considered intellectual dishonesty
to trust one of the most corrupt regimes to carry out such a colossal
task.

You see scheming the surface no one is against building a dam, a highway or
a factory. The truth of the matter is that most Ethiopians will give the
shirt of their back *if* it will help our country. The problem lies with
that qualifier ‘if’ it just leaves an uncertain feeling doesn’t it? That is
the problem with our renaissance dam project. It is a very uncertain
proposal that is difficult to explain and not easy to digest.

It is not easy because based on reality, as we have known it the last
twenty years the people in power cannot be trusted to do anything that will
bring honor or pride to our country. No one in his right mind will trust
the folks in charge to be able to bring any project to a successful
conclusion. If there is anything we can be sure of is that they will find a
hundred different ways to screw us up. Here is the real Ethiopia in
nutshell:

1)      Social harmony: None. Our country is divided into Kilils and we are
made to view each other with suspicion and hate. We are in fact deporting
our own citizens within the country. Today the regime is attempting to
create conflict among our old religions throughout the land. Both
Christians and Moslems are resisting mightily but it is an uphill
struggle.

2)      Economy: Bankrupt. Inflation is double digits and unemployment is
beyond imagination. Over eight million people are on food aid and famine is
real. The government is in the process of leasing land to foreigners so
they can grow crops for export. The economy is controlled by EFFORT a one
ethnic based conglomerate.

3)      War: Plenty. Since coming to power the TPLF regime has fought with
Eritrea and sacrificed over eighty thousand lives. It has invaded Somalia
and no one knows the sacrifice in human lives and money. Inside the country
it has sent its solders to kill in Gambella, Ogaden, Hawasa, Gondar, Afar,
etc.

4)      Politics: Waging relentless disruption against opposition parties
and groups is second nature to the regime. In the aftermath of the 2005
elections the regime murdered over two hundred eighty citizens, imprisoned
all the opposition and hauled over forty thousand people to concentration
camps. (We thank the heroic act of Judge Woldemariam and his associates in
smuggling out the evidence) The Parliament is the playground of the Prime
Minster.

5)      Media: Government monopoly. Television. Radio, print media,
Internet and telecommunications are all controlled by the regime.
Independent voice is not allowed. Our friends Eskinder Nega, Reyot Alemu
and Webeshet Taye among many others are today in prison because they spoke
and wrote the truth.

There is no need to recount further atrocity the question becomes how could
you trust such a ruthless bunch of sycophants to carry out a noble task as
building a dam? One has to be plenty gullible or certified moron to go
along with such Ponzi scheme. How could you hand your hard earned money
where there is no accountability, no consultation or any outside
independent audit?

This is what Ambassador Girma Birru, Special Envoy and Ambassador
Extra-ordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of
Ethiopia to the US and non-resident envoy to Mexico – another long title
don’t you think? Any way here is how Aiga reported it *‘In his revealing
statement the Ethiopian Special Envoy recounted the propitious political
climate which is prevalent in present day Ethiopia that allows the free
participation of the citizenry in matters ranging from the right to
assembly, association, expression and faith up to and including the basic
right to vote in elections that are held regularly @ the county, district,
state and federal levels.’ *Do you think he actually believes that? He must
have said what was reported, the question becomes who is crazy them or us?
You be the judge.

In our presentation here in Oakland both speakers were adamant in saying
the renaissance dam site is sparsely populated and no one was moved or
relocated. Isn’t it always surprising all their projects are so pure and
picked for locations where no Ethiopian resides? But at the same time why
do we come across a whole bunch of our citizens that have been made
homeless when their land is leased to forsaken foreigners? Then why do we
hear our brother Ato Ojulu from Gambella who has been forced from his
ancestral land pleading from Kenya? Their lie seems never to stop.

In conclusion I would like to say something. It is true but a sad
statement. The assembly in our city was a reflection of what is taking
place in our country. It has to be pointed out because it has to be
discussed openly and corrected in a timely manner. As I said there were
less than thirty people present and over ninety percent were from one
ethnic group. Pretending otherwise is not healthy. The question to ask is
why? Why would only Tigreans show up to support the construction of a dam
on Abbay? Abbay is far from Tigrai Kilil so why are they feeling this
special affinity to this project? It is a valid question. I am sure we all
have all seen this kind of weird and strange situation on every question
raised in our homeland.

I will give my answer and it is definitely not the final statement on the
issue. It is what I think right or wrong. My response is to help us openly
analyze the dilemma faced by all of us and devise a healthy and lasting
solution instead of whispering from behind and muddying the situation
further. First of all this virus was brought upon us by no other than Meles
Zenawi and his accomplices. It was in the late seventies while all were
trying to form a united front and fight the Derg that his group insisted in
this separate non-inclusive way of struggle. Their first causality was the
brave patriotic EPRP that sacrificed beautiful children of Ethiopia in
their prime. Meles Zenawi did as much damage as Mengistu Hailemariam when
it comes to our educated and dedicated brothers and sisters that stood for
real freedom and unity of our nation. We will never forget.

Since 1992 TPLF has inoculated our nation with this deadly virus more
dangerous than HIV aids. They have set us up against each other. Our
meeting is the result of this disease that even follows us into a free
land. Tigreans have become hostages of this disease and the rest of us have
allowed it to simmer while a few have bought into this crap. It is true a
few Tigreans are riding this wave and accumulating wealth and riding rough
on the rest of us. Meles and company are always pointing out our
differences and making sure the few they have chosen are displayed. What is
true in today’s Ethiopia is that all real power is in the hands of this
ethnic group starting from the security, military, banking, commerce and
key organizations. On the other hand the average Tigrai living in the rural
areas of his kilil is as much the victim as rest of our own peasants. No
matter how some put it the Tigrai Kilil is not the paradise it is portrayed
to be. The TPLF tugs in charge are the same everywhere.

Do we buy into this negative scenario as painted by Meles and company or
see it as the self-serving philosophy by a few friends and family to extend
their evil rule over all of us? Has this kind of mind set ever shown to
work or has it at certain point exploded on the makers and taken all into
the abyss? Isn’t that what we see in history when we study totalitarian
systems and their implosion from inside? Isn’t that what happened in Libya?
Are we witnessing it in Syria with Assad and his Alawit tribe fighting for
dear life from house to house? What do you think is going to happen in
Syria once Assad and his little army are wiped away? Syria is not going
anywhere but what kind of Syria would it be? Can they just forget the hate
and animosity that has been cultivated and put their energy on building a
new society? Or would it take a long time to wash away the negative energy,
mistrust and hate that have been systematically planted in every Syrian
brain?

When we see our Ethiopia these are the things we should contemplate instead
of trying to out perform each other on the level of our hate. We should be
very careful on how we view the situation and search deep into our heart
and soul before we judge others due to their ethnic affiliation or
religion. None of us choose where we are conceived. We should be judged on
what kind of human being we have become. Sometimes in times of scarcity and
fear buying into the evil design of a few we all go astray. The only thing
that will bring us back to the right path is show of love and tolerances
not more hate and further attempt at marginalizing. Remember both the
perpetrator and victim are connected and the attempt should be to save both
if possible without doing further damage.

I am sure all those that gathered in our meeting love Ethiopia. I am sure
in their own way they all think they are doing the right thing.
Unfortunately both sides cannot be right. The road taken by the current
government has only shown that this sort of exclusive journey is not
lasting nor will it bear good fruit. Our job is to patiently explain the
futility of traveling on this dead end street and bring our people back to
our fold. That is not done thru condemnation, name-calling or threat but
show of love, understanding and showing by example. It is a shame educated
and conscious Ethiopians have fallen pray to this narrow ethnic divide and
some by cooperation a few by their silence have emboldened the sick and
worthless students of TPLF garage and nihilist philosophy. I believe in
every one of us our kind side outweighs the evil and bad and our challenge
is to bring out the good and infect our people with this sweet medicine God
has built into us. We pray for our country.

Choreographed Petition

Mankelklot Haile Selassie (PhD) – June 5, 2012

On may 5, 2012, I signed a petition organized by Ato Tedla Assfaw. For the reason I did not understand my signature and the comment I made under my signature was removed. This was the comment I made:

“Shame on President Obama and the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for letting this ruthless human rights violator to step on the soil of this great nation, the United States of America. History will judge these International Organizations, including the President and the Secretary of the State, for they are part of this forum, to invite such an individual by knowing what this individual did and is doing against the people of Ethiopia. To invite an individual who is sucking the blood of the Ethiopian people, with intent, who designed his own economic system with in the economic system of the country to such economic related forum of such magnitude is a stinging and a cruel insult to the people of Ethiopia. Shouldn’t they show some feeling for such an oppressed society? It is very sad.”

The land grab and the forced relocation are logical and inevitable extensions of Meles’s design of his scheme of an economic system within the economic system of the country whereby he established his business empire. The regime has turned into a government corporate day and night working to annex profitable areas of productions, services, trade, and transport, the publicly owned enterprises. It is a criminal enterprise that completely categorizes it as a mafia government, Meles Zenawi at its helm. The land grab and the forced relocation hold very minor spots of this blood sucker’s bigger scheme. It is a fact that Meles Zenawi meticulously designed and voraciously implemented his economic system within the economic system of the country, if such a thing called economic system of the country existed in Ethiopia in the first place. I argue that anything what Meles and his regime do with any of the economic related activities in the country, be it road construction in the absence of farmers agricultural produce and goods of any kind that needed transportation; school constructions without the supply of even the minimum required teaching facilities, without adequate administrative personnel, and without trained and qualified teaching staff; selling lands etc., are vertically and horizontally built and developed on this bench mark. Through time their voracious economic activities built unstoppable greediness and more greediness into their blood system. So, today, they are reaping this never challenged economic benefit under the nose of the Ethiopian people, under the nose of the opposition forces inside Ethiopia, and under the nose of the opposition forces in Diaspora. It is only uprising or coup d’état that dislodges this extremely wealthy corporate turned regime from its power.

Had Meles and his regime were confronted and resisted without compromise by the opposition forces itemized above, at the moment of the inception of his design was known to exist, or, at the beginning of its implementation, most likely, the land grab and the forced relocation, and the annexation of public enterprises would have not taken place. Since no one dare challenged him, both mentally and physically, by physically I mean by protestations and public meetings, so followed the annexation of profitable areas of production, services, trade and transport the publicly owned enterprises; so followed land grab and forced relocation; so followed the giving of land to Sudan; and so followed the changing of the boundaries within the provinces in its favor. Who the hell is going to challenge Meles. No body. Particularly Meles, he can do anything and everything that he wishes to do in Ethiopia.

Ato Tedala seemed to lack the understanding of the link between the land grab and forced relocation and these core issues that I tried to itemize above when he removed my signature and my comment from the petition. In whose favor did he remove my comment? Was it in favor of Meles? Was it in favor of president Obama? President Obama was an a social activist. He very well understands these kinds of blunt criticism and the angle it is coming from. Or, was it in favor of the Secretary Hillary Clinton? Or was it in favor of these hypocrites, the G8 groups?

Once I read Ato Tedla’s complaint that he was red-flagged and ejected from a pal-talk forum. How does he reconcile his complaint with what he did to my comment?

I did not want to post this comment earlier because there were very spirited discussions of interconnected issues all over social medias and pal-talk forums. I did not want to inject this challenge in that kind of environment. I thought, now, when things have cooled down will be the appropriate time to do it

While I am at raising issues, at least of concern to me, I want to share my complementary and perhaps challenging as well as provocative observations and arguments regarding, a) Ato Abebe Gelaw’s well calculated combat, b) the eviction of the Amaras, and c) Moresh the Organization.

a) Abebe Gelaw’s well calculated combat.

From the outset I am going to say that Abebe Gelaw could have done a high and a deserved damage to Meles Zenawi and at the same time let those G8 groups know the real person who they have in their midst. He could have carpet-bombed this traitor until he was crushed and fallen on his face, so to speak. Here are the ammunitions that Abebe left out, ammunitions that could have destroyed and exposed him more powerfully:

–Meles is a murderer

–Meles is a blood sucker

–Meles is a mafia leader

–Meles is an invdor

–Meles is a traitor

Is there any one who can refute these facts? Does Abebe Gelaw challenge these facts? So, why did he leave them out? He said Meles is a Dictator eight times. I typed dictator with the upper letter “D” because there are incomparable differences between Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian and even Sudan’s dictators. The above six characteristics of Meles will adequately substantiate this argument. Abebe said Freedom six times. If these affected Meles Zenasi the manner it was demonstrated by his demeanor, one can imagine the extent to which he could have been destroyed had Abebe used the above five ammunitions in addition to the ammunitions he used. Generally, one can say that what Abebe did was tantamount to a limited hand-to-hand combat with the bayonet extended.

The other thing that I observed was when Abebe Gelaw was being interviewed by ESAT. He was explaining things by referring to Meles Zenawi, “ISACHEW.”…… This blood sucking murderer who repeatedly have shown his unreserved disrespect and contempt for the people of Ethiopia shouldn’t have been given any respect.  Abebe is not in Ethiopia.  He is here in the United States of America where one can say and write about anything at any time. If one cannot use this liberty in the United States of America one cannot, even think about it, to use such liberty any where in the world. Abebe missed the opportunity whereby he could have liberated himself and have called a spade a spade.

The above comment is made with respect and appreciation of his combat against Meles Zenawi. It was a kind of battle. Imagine a battle field being that forum of G8. My other tangential comment would be that I wish he had organized it in a manner where there could have been a couple more individuals of his caliber at strategic locations and bombarded Meles. May be this type of strategy would be used in the future.

 b) The Eviction of the Amaras

I held back my observation at the time it was being discussed very hotly and emotionally. For me, what Meles did was not surprising. He was vehemently hateful of Amaras beginning when he was in the forest. Perhaps, particularly for Meles, the hatred he had for Amaras could have been the reason that drove him to the forest. Then, one of his recruitment criteria to build up his force was, “those who accept and believe that Amaras are out-and-out enemies of Tigray people.” His target was the Amara nationality; yes there is an Amara nationality, like Italians, his grandfather’s masters, who had deliberately targeted Amaras. Therefore, I was not that much angry about what Meles did to Amaras. But, I was very angry with what the evicted Amaras did not do. What was absolutely baffling to me was when tens of thousands of people were being kicked out without any resistance or without any type of showdown. Just like that. It looks like a single individual was being kicked out from what he/she owned. It was simply like sheep being herded to their slaughter house. Their mere number could have been a formidable force to be reckoned with had they stood their ground by coming forward to challenge Meles. Let Meles bring down his tanks and see what could have happened. If Meles did any harm to them due to their resistance the issue would have been taken over by international organizations, both governmental and nongovernmental, and international ain stream Medias.

Here, it is very important not to assume that the local communities were behind it and were involved in this heinous act. I can boldly say that it is not in the nature of Ethiopian society. This argument can be extended to the Muslim communities where the burning of churches and the killing of Christians took place. These kinds of heinous and divisive actions can be done by few extremists within that community who are brainwashed by outside agitations. Given well equipped with the current technologically advanced instruments, it is very easy to organize such actions from outside as well as within the extremists. I have specifically pointed out, in detail, the potential for these types of disruptive and heinous actions in my research based article, Why Ethiopia Should Stay in Somalia, Nov. 5, 2008.

The current Muslim extremists in Nigeria are trained in Somalia. Right now, one can logically assume that Ethiopian Muslim extremists to be trained in Somalia too.

What has gotten into Amaras anyway, particularly those in Gojam, Gondar, Wello and Shawa? The existing generations of Amaras, including those in Diaspora whose families are in the above mentioned provinces, are insults to the forefathers who gallantly fought and resisted for example the five years of Italian invasion.

For your information, there were fourteen groups of Patriots who gave the Italians very hard time. There could be more unrecorded ones. There were two groups of Patriots in Tigray, two groups of Patriots in Gondar, one group of Patriot in Wello, three groups of Patriots in Gojam, four groups of

Patriots in Shawa, one group of Patriot in Jimma and one group of Patriot in Wellega. (The Ethiopian Patriots: forgotten voices of Italo-Abyssinian war 1935-41. Andrew Hilton, 2007) Get this book and read it. You will be witnessing as if you were in the midst of the war.

Coming back to the issue at hand, the Amaras let Meles give away their land to Sudan; they let Meles cut away part of their land and incorporate it into Tigray province. What is going on? What do those Amaras in Diaspora say about it? To say it is collectively Ethiopian people’s problem but not specifically of Amaras problem is an outright copout and shunning ones responsibility. Primarily it is your problem and it is your responsibility. You are the owner of the problem. Therefore it is still partly your responsibility to deal with it and deal with it well. A person will not sit down and watch while his house is on fire. It is in his nature to start putting out the fire and cry for help. Then the neighbors will come out to help him. You have to admit that it is primarily your problem and therefore take up the challenge.

If Meles had told these many thousands of evicted Amaras to cross a crocodile infested river would have they done it? Probably yes. They would have preferred to take their chances and risk to be eaten by crocodiles than resisting Meles Zenawi. I can’t tell you how livid I was when imagining what these people could have done and could not have done. How in the world the grown ups and the youths could have not stood their ground to defend the uprooting of the helpless newborn babies, the pregnant women, the very old ones, the innocent children, and the sick lying on their beds? Shame on them. As far as I am concerned the grown ups who did not organize themselves and come forward to defend the helpless ones, should be picked up and taken to court for betrayal. They have committed punishable crime.

What about those Amara youths and supposedly to be concerned grown up Amara individuals in Addis Ababa? They very well know what was taking place. How come they did not organize themselves secretly to organize those who were being evicted to resist by going down to the very place where it was taking place? There could be death, torture and harassment. Don’t such human degradation, the loss of dignity, and brutal treatment deserve any type of sacrifices? With such sacrificial resistance they could have won and let them stayed where they were in control of their property and of course their dignity as well as their destiny. By extension they could have become good examples to be emulated for those who are in their situations including the non-Amaras.

c. What about Moresh the Organization?

What is Moresh the organization doing now? Particularly regarding Ethiopia, it is shown consistently that diplomatic activities of any kind did not work, is not working now, and it will not work in the future. The one and the only one alternative left for Moresh the organization to be involved in is to organize the Amaras inside Ethiopia and fight for its economic and democratic rights. It is not to form ethnic political party. It is simply to form resistant movement(s) to protect and defend its economic and democratic interests. The neighboring ethnic groups can be involved through negotiations and solicitations of support.

Organizing the Amaras inside Ethiopia implies simultaneously organizing the Amaras and of course concerned progressive and democratic non-Amara individuals in Diaspora. For example, what about challenging the Amaras in Diaspora from Gondar, Gojam, Wello and Shawa to go back to the villages they were born and start organizing the movements secretly. And of course by laying out secrete communications network between the organizing individuals or groups from the provinces I mentioned above. I think it is quite obvious that the need of material support to be part and parcel of this honorable initiative.

One of the immediate issues to organize around would be to raise the issue of their lands taken away from them by force. For example, start with Sudan. Go inside the land taken away from them and destroy and burn to the ground anything and everything that has to do with any type of production oriented developments and infrastructures. Can Moresh do it? As long as there is the gut and the determination, the answer is emphatically yes. The individuals who organized it got the unquestionable potential wrapped with deep rooted experience to be able to do it. If it does not have the gut and the commitment to do such extremely needed organizational action, then, inevitably, it is treading down the road of becoming irrelevant. Or, become an obvious paper tiger.

When we were the achievers.

 By Yilma Bekele

I am always harking back to the pleasant years of our past. Believe me it not being nostalgic rather it is the lack of good news that makes me reach deep to salvage a little bit of dignity how ever fleeting that might be. One can also make an argument for the fact that my generation has lost the battle to continue on the tradition of leaving intact what was passed on to us. Actually what was expected was a little bit of enhancement but we seem to have managed to degrade and discount. Let us not talk about that today.

What made me despondent is reading about Huajian Shoe factory in Dukem. The story as told by China Post claims ‘Huajian, one of China’s biggest shoe manufacturers, plans to invest US$2 billion in Ethiopia to make shoes for export to Europe and North America.’ On the face of it the story looks perfectly normal and one could even find positive spin in its added value to our country and people. But that will be considered scheming the surface wouldn’t it? We have to put the story in its context to fully appreciate the ramifications as it relates to our future as a country.

Huajian is what got me started to ask why are the Chinese manufacturing shoes in Ethiopia. Have we always been a challenged people that we can’t even make our own shoes? Not so! Said my memory. There was a time we were one cleaver people that knew how to make stuff. For crying out loud, there is no need to be a student of history when it was only yesterday that we excelled in all sorts of enterprises right here in good old Ethiopia. Yes my dear Diaspora cousin we had a whole bunch of entrepreneurs that achieved as never before and galvanized a whole nation. Sad to say the military dictatorship under Mengistu was the beginning of the cause of the total eclipse of individual achievement and national pride.

Before Huajian there was Darmar shoe factory. Darmar shoes were prominently displayed on every shelf. Asko was a brand name from Asmara to Moyale. The cow was Abyssinian, the shoemaker was Abesha and the citizens of Ethiopia wore the product with pride. Azzo, Asko and Darmar were locally manufactured shoe wear. Nothing left our motherland. Capital was raised, invested and recycled right there. That is how you build an economy. That is how you grow capital.

That was shoes, now was there any other enterprise that are the hallmark Ethiopian ingenuity. How can we forget the Hotel business? I am not talking Sheraton here. I am into Ato Bekele Molla, the shining star of the hospitality business. His innovative Hotels from Addis to Arba Minch were the pride of travelers in the beautiful South. So clean, fresh and staffed by well-trained professionals defined the new concept of customer service. He was truly an innovative and inspiring giant of man. He was the definition of by Ethiopia for Ethiopians.

Ato Yenberber Mamo (Mamo Kacha) defined transportation. A self-made entrepreneur, his innovative style of free enterprise pushed all other to excel to catch up with him. His buses were clean, on time and affordable. The music blaring from the speakers on front were loud enough to wake up the dead and you know the bus was here miles before it reaches the little village. His enthusiastic business style gave birth to others such as Awraris, Mekonen Negash and a host of others that followed his footsteps.

Have you heard of Ato Molla Maru? That is another rags to riches Ethiopian saga. Ato Molla Maru was a proud owner of an Ethiopian Liquor factory. To see a made in Ethiopia Cognac, Ouzo etc. in a clean bottle adorned in Amharic labels was something to behold. He was an entrepreneur par excellence that rose from a humble beginning to running a modern factory.

Then there is my friends dad Ato Teka Egeno a business man of special caliber, self made visionary that will put any college educated MBA to shame. He was into coffee since he was a product of Keffa province and put our country on the map and was able to keep stride with big import export houses. Humble and smart is what comes to mind when I think of him.

All of the above giants I recited were imbued with that special God given smarts, common sense and talent that can not be learned but fostered by a sense of vision, love and driven to excel. Their accomplishment rubbed off on all those around them. Growing up I remember dreaming to emulate their accomplishments. Their success was like a beacon calling us to follow the path they were trail blazing. I believe my generation was filled with a sense of hope and can do attitude because they were showing us what is possible with hard work and perseverance.

They in turn gave birth to the new educated modern day giants that built up on their elders’ accomplishments. My role model were my two dear friends the Solomon’s that graduated from Alem Maya Agricultural College and made their marks in the Awash valley turning dust into cash. They were the pioneers that put theory into practice. They pushed the envelope to the limit and in so doing surprised them selves and their nation. A time will come when their story will be told and what an epic it would be.

My friends were visionaries born in a place and time that appreciated their drive to excel. They managed to secure land, were given credit to buy machinery their fuel supply was subsidized and their progress was celebrated. Success breeds success and at one point the sky was the limit to their hopes and dreams. Ato Solomon died a year ago. He died in exile away from his beloved Ethiopia. His funeral was another moment of revelation of how much our country had lost. Those assembled to pay their respect were people who should under favorable circumstances would have been the building blocks of the future Ethiopia. Today our achievers are building another land. Ethiopia’s lose has become Americas gain.

And darkness came. Our country entered a period of untold misery. The Derg’s style of change was not that of building on what works but it was based on finding the common lowest denominator. Why bring everything up when you can reduce all down. All that I mentioned above was smashed to pieces. The innovators and builders were all of a sudden declared enemy of the people and their success was seen as the cause of what is wrong with society. Spring was replaced by the darkness of winter.

Our fathers were emasculated and wilted. Our entrepreneurs and builders of the new society met a different fate. Some resigned to a life of no consequence. A few were killed. While others bid their time and got out to start anew. Ethiopia was a net loser however you look at it.

Huajian and the philosophy behind it is what brought all this lamentation. The TPLF mafia in power is the conduit of this degradation of self-reliance and celebration of individual achievement. According to tyrant Meles hard work is old fashioned while short cut and quick rich schemes are the wave of the future. There is a new culture being encouraged thru out the land and it achievement by corruption. It is not what you know but whom you know. In the land of Meles Zenawi can you think of an Ethiopian that has achieved by hard work and perseverance? I am sure you can name plenty that have emerged as multi-millionaires due to proximity to those in power or belonging to certain ethnic group. Those are the people our children look up to. A street hustler today a millionaire tomorrow is the new reality. It is void of value.

Dear reader let me ask you something. What makes the Ethiopian Nation different from the rest? They say there are over one hundred ninety six countries in the world, what is unique about us? One thing stands out and that is we have never been colonized! No one has occupied our country. We have never submitted. We might be poor, we might be backward in technological terms but we are not a push over. It is even said that when the British left after their excursion to Magdella they were asked to wash their boots least they take our soil with them! That is how much our forefathers disdained foreign intrusion. By fate or design that is what is woven in our DNA.

The Tewodroses, the Yohaneses, the Minilks, the Balchas aba Nefsos, the Abebe Argawis, the Sebaht Aregawi and Sebhat Shumes, the Taitu Bituls were examples of that proud achievement. The Bekele Mollas, the Mamo kachas, the Molla Marus, the Teka Egenos were a continuation of that self-reliant spirit. Born and raised in Ethiopia.

What we got today? Selling land, selling children and selling our soul. Thus instead of making our own shoes we invite shoe makers instead of building our own hotels we contract to multi nationals instead of brewing our own drinks we sell our homegrown to foreign entities instead of building our own houses out of sustainable bamboo and reeds we import cement and recycled metal to construct wasteful ugly boxes instead of growing our own food we lease our virgin and fertile land to grow that we can’t consume instead of educating our children to raise our knowledge we exile our youth to care for some one else’s child. Today the same foreigners that could not conquer our land by force are buying it using dollar and euros. Woyane takes that money and invests in the West and the rest of us cheer from the sidelines.

It was a revealing moment to see Sheik Al Amoudi boasting from the podium how all four star hotels in the Middle East serve fruits grown in Ethiopia and Meles Zenawi with his cadres assembled cheer with pride. That is how brain dead we have become. Today Meles Zenawi a person that has never worked for wages in his life, that has never balanced a bank account, that has never paid rent, that has never ever run a simple kiosk or taken order from a boss is put in charge of a national economy and the joke is on us. Theory is never a substitute for real life situation. Then again the same individual that got all that he knows from the books he reads is actually in the process of defining such concepts as ‘economic growth and democracy’! Of course his ferenji enablers are looking at all this with amusement. Unfortunate for us the individual actually is in the process of trying to prove this utterly simplistic thought in practice and our country is his laboratory.

What is proven by those that have surged ahead and are enjoying the fruits of success is you make your own shoes, you construct your own hotels with locally produced products you encourage individuals that show drive and you invest on your young ones so tomorrow they will build on what you have started. But all this does not come easy. You work for it. You nurture it. There is no short cut. That goes the same for attaining freedom, here again there is no short cut, there is no knight in shining armor nor can it be outsourced. They say if the shoe fits wear it. Would you rather wear Huajian or Darmar, it is your choice my friend.

My brother Abebe and his WMD

 By Yilma Bekele

I doubt there is an Ethiopian in the Diaspora not familiar with what happened last Friday. As they say the video has gone viral. The act has brought deep satisfaction to the psych of the oppressed and left the evildoers in disarray. Abebe took less than one minute to do what has been tried for over twenty years. His heroic act will be remembered in the history books like that other important event in the annals of our glorious past.

Of course I am talking about the daring act of none other Abraha Deboch, Moges Asgedom and Simeyon Adefres on February 19, 1937. The Fascist Italian Viceroy Rodolfo Graziani was set to celebrate the second anniversary of the occupation of our homeland and the birth of an Italian royal baby at Addis Abeba Palace now Addis Abeba University. That did not sit well with our freedom fighters.

Simeyon who has learned to drive befriended a soldier from the household of the patriot leader Dejazmach Fikre Mariam and was able to secure hand grenades. Abraha and Moges hurled their grenades at the Viceroy during the celebration but the balcony saved the Fascist pig. Their job was done. Honor was restored. The attempt on the Viceroy was followed by the massacre of the citizens of Addis from February 19-21. Their heroism was able to fill the hearts of their people with pride and joy and the number of the patriotic forces swelled until victory was achieved.

What my friend and brother Abebe Gelaw did was no less. It was a different time and place but the generous act on behalf of country and people is noted by all patriotic forces that stand against tyranny by a single individual. The setting was perfect and the delivery was laser guided. The event was a very shameful attempt to humiliate Ethiopia and its people. There was no other way of looking at this act of abdication of responsibility by the President of the US other than to bully our people into submission by affirming this unholy alliance that does not have lasting value to both our Nations. We pleaded, we warned and we tried to teach the administration the folly of this enabling act of a tyrant. It fell on deaf ears. We are aware of the fact Mr. Obama will not be seen with Ahmadinejed. He will not invite Assad for dinner. But he felt no qualms sitting with this criminal leader and place him on the same dais as elected heads of State. Our people and country were insulted. This election Ethiopian Americans should pay attention to this fact.

It was wrong. But our brother Abebe was there to set the record straight. Abebe used the art of ‘political heckling’ in its purest form. Citizens heckle out of anger and frustration. Heckling done right subverts the proceedings and knock the powerful and famous from their stride. In less than a minute Abebe accomplished all that and more. The lion roared and the mouse scurried away. There was no hole to hide no place to take shelter. The intense light showed the paper tiger from Arat kilo for what he is, underneath all that TPLF bravado there sits a little scared soul trying to get out. A bully met his match. The Prime Mister preys on the weak. In Washington DC the playing field was leveled in favor of the silenced and oppressed.

Since Friday all the talk has been about the patriotism, unselfish act and bravery of one individual. Yes it is true some people find the inner strength to rise up for the occasion. Somehow they dig deep inside their soul and come up with earth shaking feat that defies the law of nature and gravity. Do you think I am laying it on heavy? I very much doubt that. Can you think of any setting on that fateful Friday where the eyes of the planet were focused on? A meeting with the President of the US, the most powerful person in the world attended by the major News networks definitely counts as the premier event of the week. One individual put everything else aside and decided to be the voice of eighty million silenced souls. OH did he speak!!

Meles Zenawi is a dictator! Meles Zenawi is a dictator! Free Eskinder and all political prisoners! You are a dictator! You are committing crimes against humanity! You do not talk about food without freedom! We need freedom more than food! We need Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!

It was short, precise and to the point. It is all choice words that conveyed our hopes and wishes. The delivery was forceful and the face was that of an angry lion roaring. Where did Abebe get all that energy is a good question? He got it from us! At that moment eighty million souls converged in the body of my friend and he was transformed into human missile of untold force. I was there. You were there. We were all there. Then it came to me. The message was not really directed at President Obama or anyone else. The message was for his people. Abebe was showing us the power of the individual and the enabling act of taking personal responsibility for you fate.

That is why I compared it to Abraha, Moges and Simeyon. Their heroic act was not just about killing Graziani. Mussolini can always send another Viceroy. They were more focused in teaching us what can be accomplished when individuals set their focus and energy in search of freedom. The fact of the matter was it worked. The patriots were inundated by new recruits. The spirit of “Yes I can” became contagious. Apathy was replaced by action. Darkness was gone and the light shone high and bright. That is what I saw the last three days. Ethiopians walking tall. Ethiopians high Fiving each other. Ethiopians understanding the power of the individual to rise up for the occasion.

What was revealing from this incident was the reaction of two individual. The Prime Minster was left speech less. He was left with his mouth wide open and his brain on freeze mode. He entered uncharted territory and he was on a free fall. Abebe’s timing was perfect. The PM was replying about food. That by itself is a very cruel joke being played on our people by the hapless moderator. The question gave the impression the moderator was chosen for his looks and his talking head not his journalistic credentials. He is the kind who would ask the pilot of the Titanic on the procedure of glacier avoidance or Colonel Gadaffi on the art of confronting a hostile mob.

The PM who is celebrating over twenty years in power is the last person to be asked such question. His ill planned policy is the cause of recurring famine and disaster on our ancient land and people. In a sane setting he should be chided for failure of leadership. But in this Disney land environment we were witnessing he was pontificating how the agriculture system should be set to avoid food insecurity. Even the words they choose are not to expose but hide and play cute games at the expense of our people. They call it food insecurity, mal nutrition, calorie deficiency whereas to our people it is pure famine or the absence of food. Nothing more nothing less.

The PM locked side ways with a look of surprise. How could this happen is his first thought. Then he saw the Lion roaring. Relentless, focused, and imbued with the energy of eighty millions and this was one mighty Lion. The dictator looked down. The dictator shrank. The wrath of the oppressed, the spirit of Eskinder, Andualem, Reeyot and all those ghosts he left behind in his dungeon came screaming to haunt him right there on stage.  Evil does not pay. The price of bad deeds is mental anguish.

The reaction of his bodyguard is another revealing moment in this high stake drama. He threatened violence against my brother. He responded the only way he knows. ‘We will kill you’ he uttered! What a weak statement. What an empty threat. What a solution to propose for the problem he found himself in. What would have been accomplished by the killing of my brother? They say you cannot teach an old dog a new trick. Killing is the only language the PM and his associates speak. That is the sort of people President Obama invited to his table. We are saddened by this act. We expected better from the son of Africa. We hoped for better things. What the white leaders have done for their brethren in Europe we thought a black president will bring us respite from this agony our continent finds itself in. Not today. We are on our own. Our destiny is in our won hands. It has always been, but the last few years we have shown the tendency to drop the ball. But when you think the future looks bleak the problems pile up and darkness attempts to engulf our soul there rises a beam of bright light like the star of Bethlehem that led the three wise men to where Jesus was born.

That is what we shall do. We shall follow the spirit of our young friend and take matters into our own hands. We will redouble our efforts to free our country and people by any means necessary. One does not make appointment to be free. We start now. We each vow in our homes, our work place wherever we are to start the day of defiance of the evil system starting now. It is the result of our collective effort that can usher the era of peace, democracy and freedom. We do not act due to hate. We do not act to hurt others. But we have God given right to protect ourselves, our family and our country and people from evil.

Live, I wanna live inspired

Die, I wanna die for something

Facing towards the heavens

I fell into pitch a black

I’m moments from landing and I’m shaking like a heart attack

Is there time, can I turn back

I’ve made mistakes in the past

Need a chance, can’t take it back

Wish I could set things right tonight

Live, I wanna live inspired

Die, I wanna die for something higher than myself

Live and die for anyone else

The more I live I see this life’s not about me

All I know spins out of control

Wonder what’s next for the heart and soul

Nothing I earned can save me now

Hear in what may be my final hour

Don’t want to leave this world, knowing I’ve lived in vain

No time for myself, so sorry, so ashamed

Don’t wanna livee this life, knowing I’ve barely tried

Chase down all my dreams that I’ve hid away on the inside

Live I wanna live on fire

Die, I wanna burn out brighter

Brighter than the Northern Lights

Wanna live to feel the daylight

The more I live

I see, this life is not about me

Ethiopians May Victory at Regan Building in Washington DC !!!!!!

Tedla Asfaw

Friday May 18, 2012 will be remembered as one of the major victories the
Ethiopian Diaspora in the DC  area scored against Meles Zenawi and his few
supporters who were cornered on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th
St. I was surprised why they secured a permit on the 13th St and gave the
opposition a better spot to humiliate Meles Zenawi and his backer President
Obama. This was their major failure which  saved the day otherwise the huge
anti Meles crowd would have charged against them to stop the Obama
Limousine and would have been ugly.

Friday May 18 around 7am the 13 St corner Meles supporters/Neche Kofia
were making little noise without any impact at all. Around 7:30 am we were
alerted by skillful young organizers that journalists and other dignitaries
were lined up to enter at the Regan Building. While told  we have no permit
to go there by the organizers and security people we cross the Pennsylvania
Avenue for Action. Emotion run high, the denunciation of Mels Zenawi for
his crime against humanity was very loud and clear. We went on for almost
thirty minutes while watched by big gun drawn by security. It was amazing.
The good thing, Meles was not there.

We went back to our designated area on Pennsylvania Avenue and 14 St corner
with great pride after we made our voice for Freedom and Dignity loud and
clear to all who have responsibility to write and educate the public, free
media of the world. On  Pennsylvania Avenue the crowd number tripled and
slogan condemning Meles Zenawi and President Obama for promoting human
right abuser on the G8 Conference on “Food Security” was loud.

The VOA journalist, Henok was alerted about the action he missed at the
entrance of the Regan Building. Apparently he was not interested even to
ask on what has happened and was interviewing one of the organizers briefly
before he left the scene around 8pm. He reported on  VOA Amharic yesterday
that few hundreds Ethiopians and few government supporters were condemning
and supporting Meles respectively. His report is inaccurate because it only
covers the first  hour of our action of the day and even missing the big
action while he was there. We have audios and videos to back our claim.

The battle on Pennsylvania Avenue to open the Woodrow Wilson Plaza stair
case and the side walk brought us scuffle with security officers. But the
crowd when you compare it from its size was polite and in fact the Plaza
helped us to divert the crowd to open up the sidewalk. The young, the old ,
women and men, Ethiopian Muslims before the Friday prayer joined us to tell
the world that Ethiopians faced both Food Insecurity and Freedom to choose
their representative and  leaders at all levels.

Obama, Where is your promise ? Shame on You President Obama !!! This was
reverberating on the Pennsylvania Avenue. The people who were going to
school or work saw us and got their support by honking their cars
and taking flyers prepared by different civic organizations in the
Ethiopian Diaspora. When we were alerted the  coming of Meles Zenawi
around 9am we brake all the laws to chase this man before entering the
building. Mayhem and scream forced security officers to draw their guns and
we knelled down to hold our ground.

Meles is a Killer , Meles is a Looter, Meles is our land Seller, etc. We
hold our ground for twenty minutes before security people took us to our
permit area across Pennsylvania Avenue. I have never seen such thing
before. When the last time we had a protest against Meles in USA it was
September 2010 in New York at Columbia. We were not given a chance to see
him and he was forced to enter a back door.

This is a humiliation he deserves after taking up power by Gun Seven Years
ago on this month. Seven years ago on May 15 he ordered the killing of
hundreds and the jailing of thousands of Ethiopians when they voted him out
of office. Since then Ethiopia is under Miitialry Fascistic rule financed
by the West. For the last seven years Meles and his close associates wealth
accumulated out of Ethiopia is more than 11.5 billion dollar while USAID is
feeding poor Ethiopians.

USAID, In Dictator We Trust was the slogan that greeted Obama. Around 10am
Pennsylvania Avenue was closed for traffic. Traffic turned back. That was
the time we control this famous street to send our message loud and clear.
Obama came from White House escorted by police cars and black limousines.
The Ethiopian Green and Red Flag greeted him with shout and condemnation
for supporting a world known human right abuser. Obama, Stop supporting a
Terrorist, Meles Zenawi is a Terrorist. No Food Security without Freedom.
Shame on You President Obama !!!! Ethiopian Americans will not Vote for You
Again !!! It was thunderous and no doubt he got our message and it is up to
him now to call in Public for Freedom to organize and speak in Ethiopia. We
don not subscribe to back door diplomacy. Ethiopia is not China !!!!

Pennsylvania Avenue loud voice between 13 and 14 st will be remembered as a
day that exposed USA  Double Standard towards Ethiopia. The protest letter
written by human right organizations and the petition signed by more than
8,000 people, the telephone call made to the White House from Ethiopians
all over the world is a fact Obama and other politicians can not ignore.

For other Ethiopians/Hodams  who are regime lovers on the 13 st we made it
clear to them what to come. They better be  advocates of freedom like the
one they enjoyed here. Fight for the same right and  freedom you have here
for the people back home. Do not exploit your own people’s land in the name
of development. Ethiopians love for their country is unparalleled. However,
the gentleness that characterized our people is misunderstood by
foreigners. Those who travelled to Ethiopia are safe in Ethiopia because
Ethiopians respect of human lives is deep in their culture. No foreigner is
blown up by suicide bomber or terrorist in Ethiopia. Ethiopia however has
been ruled under Terror and the regime wants to govern for life by
recruiting itself as a Horn Africa Security Ally of the West.

The majority of our people are now onlookers in their own country. “Wealth”
creators are foreigners and even the farmers are now forced to leave their
land to satisfy foreigners who were gathered at Regan Building in the name
of “Food Security”. Yes it is Food Security for India, Gulf Nations etc but
not for Ethiopian farmers. The people of Gambella and Afar are fighting to
keep their land. Lives are lost  and will be lost in this struggle until
foreign landlords leave Ethiopian land for Ethiopian farmers only. The
protest in front of India Embassy last week is a warning and we will
organize such protests at Saudi Arabia and other embassies which are paying
cash for long lease to control a resource which we need dearly to feed our
people.

Had Ethiopians the right to protest in their own country many countries
would have been refrained from activities that will jeopardize the food
security of our people. In the last Seven years there has never been any
protest. In Ethiopia there is no Freedom at all !!! That message was
directly delivered to all who were in the meeting hall to talk about food
security yesterday morning. Meles Zenawi is a human right abuser, There is
no Freedom in Ethiopia, Free Eskinder Nega, Freedom, Freedom Freedom
shouted Abebe Gellaw one of the producers of ESAT  TV whose voice Meles
Zenawi blocked on air with help of China. Meles got it yesterday from few
feet live from Freedom Messenger. All on that conference hall will never
forget those few seconds in their life time. The shock on Meles’ face was
clear for all. I wonder what he has said after that shocking encounter with
one of our own. Bravo Abebe !!!!!

Meles Zenawi  who was condemned  while entering at the Regan Building was
humiliated one hour after by our own in front of world leaders. I hope
Meles got a lesson coming once in a life time and resign immediately and
release all political opponents. Alah WaKiber, Egzeabher Yetekebere yehune
!!!! Victory to the people of Ethiopia !!!!
